“Learning Traditional Skills”

I’m a gardener working at Sengan-en, and I have been with Shimadzu Limited for about 4 months. We start the day with a morning meeting then clean up around the gardens for about an hour every day. After that we each go to the area we will be working on for the day and get to work. Since we are outside all day it’s tough work, especially in the summer. There are also a lot of technical skills which we have to learn. That’s what I’m focusing on now. I think this job requires a lot of self-discipline. The plants around the garden are all alive and it is our responsibility to take care of them, so we have to make sure we’re in good condition first.

“The Road to Becoming a Professional Gardener”

I do a lot of sports, and wanted to work outside so this job was an ideal fit for me. I decided to stay in Kagoshima, and working for Shimadzu Limited was the obvious choice. I’ve still only been here for four months, so I’m doing my best to keep up with the work, but the more experienced gardeners have been very kind to me and have taught me a lot. I really look up to the master gardeners, and hope that one day I’ll be able to reach their level of skill and take responsibility for my own projects.

仕事へのやりがい

I’m always happy to see customers faces the moment they walk into Sengan-en and see the gardens. Making sure the gardens are in the best state possible for visitors from all over the world really motivates me to do the best job that I can.
