“Industry Leaders in Forestry”

I wanted to do work related to nature, so I decided to study forestry at university. When I graduated I wanted to stay in Kagoshima, so I took part in a research seminar being held by Kagoshima Prefecture. That’s when I came across Shimadzu Limited. I was impressed not only by the large area of forest that they manage, but also by the many other departments they have working in a wide variety of different fields. I heard that forestry needed more young people, and decided to apply for a job at Shimadzu Limited.

“Flexible Working”

Most of my work at present involves managing the forests owned by Shimadzu Limited. At present we manage an area of approximately 2,500 hectares. We take care of the forests in collaboration with projects carried out by both the prefecture and the national government. When applying for funding from the government, the kind of terrain that the forest is on affects the application process, so we have to work flexibly to achieve the funding we need. The funding process also changes from time to time, so we always need to keep up to date with the latest changes. We also take contracts to manage forest on the behalf of other companies, and maintain a relationship with our partners and companies that purchase raw materials from us.

仕事へのやりがい

Because I love nature, I’m thrilled to be working in an environment where I’m surrounded by the mountains and trees. There are some technical terms that I’m still getting to grips with, but being able to use what I learned at university is very rewarding. I think one of the most satisfying things about my work is that no two sites are the same. The terrain and type of soil is different, and that causes the growth rate of the trees to change significantly. Even in the same site, seeing knee high saplings grow over the years into towering trees in immensely rewarding.

The forests we are caring for now were planted perhaps 50 or 60 years ago, and the trees that we are planting now will be taken care of by the next generation of foresters in the years to come. Remembering the people who planted the trees we have now, and thinking about the day when my work might be remembered is a huge source of motivation for me.
